Our Long Journey to Pregnancy

I can't believe I haven't posted since February! Currently I am 29 1/2 weeks pregnant with identical twin boys! Crazy - I know! Our journey to get to this point has been a long and bumpy (to say the least) one.

After about 1 1/2 years of trying to have a child and too way many losses, my regular OBgyn Dr. did some blood work and discovered that I have a mild case of Thrombosis, a blood clotting disorder. He prescribed a blood thinner injection for me to take the next time I was pregnant. Unfortunately, that still did not help.

At the end of 2009 our cousin, Kirsten, suggested that we go to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) to see what the problem was. Thank goodness for this advice!! I made a consultation with him for the very end of the year. The first thing he recommended was an MRI and an HSG, which I had at the end of January 2010. As it turns out the tests showed that I have a very rare uterine abnormality called Unicornuate Uterus (UU). This is basically a birth defect where one side of the uterus does not form correctly. I have about a half a uterus with only one fallopian tube, although I have 2 ovaries and luckily 2 kidneys. Apparently missing one on your kidneys is also common among people with this abnormality?! There are several different types of Uterine Abnomalities and of course I have the rarest one.

We did a few more tests with the RE that went until Mid-March but all of the other tests turned out to be ok. There is nothing you can do for a UU, except hope for the best. As it turns out, we got pregnant again at the beginning of April!
