Our Long Journey to Pregnancy continued...The First Trimester

We were ecstatic, scared, etc. once we found out we were pregnant. I went to the Dr's once a week to check my levels and everything seemed to be going fine but we were still nervous. At the end of April my parents came to visit and my mom was able to come along with us to my first ultrasound appt.

As the US technician was taking a look at everything I noticed a strange look on her face (one have seen many times before) and I just knew something was wrong. She said "There are two!" My response - "Two what?" As it turns out at 6 1/2 weeks along. we found out we were having twins! We were very excited but also very nervous. The first thing to be concerned about was the fact that basically I had 1/2 a uterus and having two babies made the likelihood of survival even more slim.

As if that wasn't enough, we learned that the twins were in the same gestational sac. This happens when the egg splits later in the cycle. It means that they share the same placenta and are identical twins! With twins in the same gestational sac, there is sometimes a membrane that separates the two amniotic sacs. This is what we were hoping for! If there is not a membrane, the chance of survival is very low because the babies get tangled in each other's cords. However, we would have to wait until 9 weeks to see if they had a membrane separating them. The membrane is very, very thin and is difficult to detect.

Towards the end of May, we went in for our 9 week appointment and they were able to detect the membrane! Thank God! We actually have a chance! Starting in June, I went to see a Perinatologist (high-risk Dr.) every two weeks and my regular OBgyn every two weeks - so basically I was at the Dr's once a week. I was ok with this - the frequent appts. made me feel a lot better. We made it to 13 weeks no problem! I didn't have very many symptoms except a little bit of nausesousness and very tired but nothing too bad.
